The Kindness of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Person I Had Just Met Helped Me Obtain the Position That Transformed My Existence

In the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a low-cost journey to the European continent with a travel partner. Since my travel mate was interested in enrolling in graduate studies in the Big Apple, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a large 10-storey building on the UWS called International House. After dropping our bags, we made our way to the canteen, where we picked up meals, took a seat, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Beside me was an Iraqi man enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He asked me what I did for a living, and I told him that I had newly finished with a scientific background and had been conducting research using an electron microscope.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the institution – right next door to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I should apply for a job with them. I dismissed the idea, explaining that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that night. The Iraqi student came up to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Because he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but right away explained to my prospective employer that I was without a work permit, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a place where everything seems achievable – she said: “We'll handle it. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for three years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to earn a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his name, but his incredible act of kindness transformed my future in numerous aspects. I would never have had the courage or nerve to approach someone at an elite institution and ask for a job. Moreover, I had long dreamed to pursue education overseas, but lacked the financial means without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that role at the university resulted in a position in Switzerland where I encountered my handsome spouse from France, with whom I now have a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
