Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry
The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.
Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Western Australia.
The selector shared that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.
"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only his injury, but other factors as well," the selector added.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he will feature a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
The captain missed the white-ball matches against India and New Zealand last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with recurrences in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 leading to absences from several home seasons in four years.
He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the series.
The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the first Test.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "small issue and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.
"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
