European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
